Chicken Land is a backyard science experiment focused on understanding the biology and environmental systems behind small-scale agriculture. By raising chickens and documenting each stage of their life cycle, this project explores topics such as animal behavior, food production, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.
Through observation and reflection, Chicken Land demonstrates how backyard agriculture can become a powerful hands-on science experience.
A Backyard Chicken System Guide
A practical beginner guide built from the documented real lessons learned while building a backyard flock - covering coop setup, daily routines, and the mistakes most new chicken keepers make first.
If this guide helps you, Venmo tips are appreciated but never required.

Chicken Mom 101 starts here! 🐥 One tub, one big dream, and a lot of peeping little reminders that growth is messy and magical. Come meet the flock and build with us from the very beginning!
3 weeks into Chicken Land and we upgraded the brooder… using an old baby playpen 😂🐣 Using an old baby playpen (aka “baby jail”), some cardboard, and bedding, we created a larger, more functional brooder space.
This is where Chicken Land really started to shift - from setup… to system thinking.
This is where things start to feel different.
The coop is built. The structure is there. But the system is still evolving.
Daily routines matter more now—watering, cleaning, and maintaining a space that works for both the chickens and us. And the flock? They’ve developed full personalities… including escape artists.
This phase isn’t about building anymore-it’s about refining. Small changes, better flow, and figuring out what actually works long-term.
They started as fluff and guesses. Now they’ve got opinions, routines, and very clear personalities. Chicks ➝ Hens Chicken Land, 9-month update 🐓
Chicken Land, January 2026 edition — small scale, real impact. This isn’t about volume. It’s about systems that work, food with purpose, and letting abundance flow where it’s needed. Same flock. Same care. This is what a small system looks like when it’s working. 🐔🥚
Once the hens started laying eggs, suddenly we had a over-supply. To solve this problem, we created a community Egg Stand for anyone in the neighborhood to have access to farm fresh eggs.
10 months into chickens—and they STILL won’t sleep where they’re supposed to… At this stage, the system is running. Daily checks are simple, eggs are coming in, and the setup is doing what it’s supposed to do. But the flock? Still full of personality. This phase is less about building—and more about managing behavior and maintaining balance.

Chicken Land draws inspiration from the growing community of backyard farmers and homesteaders who share their knowledge through social media, blogs, and videos. These creators help make the learning process faster, easier, and a lot more fun.

Raising chickens successfully requires a few practical tools that help maintain a safe and healthy environment. Chicken Land uses tools for feeding, watering, coop cleaning, egg collection, and predator protection. As the project evolves, new tools and solutions are tested to see which ones work best for small backyard flocks.
